The Summit County Historical Society of Akron, OH, was founded in 1924 by seven women of the Cuyahoga-Portage Chapter of the DAR. For over 100 years, the agency has been preserving, interpreting and educating others about our rich history. Akron is the county seat of Summit County. The City just finished celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025 with lots of exciting new adventures including the Akron History Center that's free!

The County of Summit was formed in 1840 from portions of Portage, Medina and Stark counties.
