County and Historical Society to Plant Heritage Tree to Commemorate Nation’s 250th Anniversary

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO — County Executive Ilene Shapiro and the Summit County Historical Society, in partnership with America 250-Ohio and Davey Tree, will host a ceremonial tree planting on Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. The event is part of the Heritage Trees: Planting History program sponsored by America 250-Ohio, the state commission leading Ohio’s commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In Summit County, a native white swamp oak tree will be planted at the Perkins Stone Mansion located at 550 Copley Rd in Akron. The site was selected because of the Summit County Historical Society’s role in preserving and promoting the County’s rich history that has contributed to the growth and prosperity of the nation and Colonel Simon Perkins’ role as a state senator to form the county in 1840. Event sponsor, Davey Tree, will assist with the tree planting and provide attendees with a scarlet maple sapling.

The Heritage Trees program launched in Lima on Arbor Day last April. By the end of 2026, a Heritage Tree will be planted in all 88 Ohio counties. Inspired by the historic Liberty Tree of the American Revolutionary War, the program commemorates America’s 250th anniversary by planting native white oak trees across Ohio.
